Significant changes to how federal income taxes are paid will take effect in 2025.
Starting September 30, 2025, the IRS will no longer accept paper checks for most tax payments and will only issue refunds electronically.
This shift, mandated by Executive Order 14247, is designed to modernize federal payment systems and improve efficiency.
Taxpayers who currently pay by mail will need to transition to one of the following electronic methods:
IRS Direct Pay
Pay directly from your checking or savings account with no fees.
Schedule payments up to 30 days in advance.
IRS Online Account
Make payments directly from your bank account.
View payment history, scheduled payments, and balances.
EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)
Free service for individuals and businesses to pay all federal taxes online or by phone.
Enrollment required (processing may take up to 5 days).
Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)
When e-filing through tax software or a tax professional, authorize a direct debit from your account.
A free, single-step option.
IRS2Go Mobile App
The official IRS mobile app allows payments through IRS Direct Pay or by credit/debit card.
Convenient access on the go.
